Sophie Palmer, CFA, is passionate about and committed to her profession and her industry. She has given tirelessly to CFA Montreal, initially as Vice-President, Communications on the board of directors, and for the past two years as President. We applaud her exceptional dedication and invaluable contribution to our Society.
Under Sophie’s leadership, CFA Montreal reached an unprecedented level of brand recognition through its social media communication campaigns and partnerships with key organizations in Montreal’s financial community.
A woman of determination and conviction, Sophie took care throughout her tenure to promote the values of exemplary practices and excellence associated with her role and to considerably strengthen the reputation of CFA® charterholders and the Society itself. She also helped further the diversity and impact of women in the industry. Under her presidency, the Women in Investment Management series saw a marked increase in attendance, jumping first from 100 to 300, then up to 500 participants at the events. The talks by Claire Shipman and Sallie Krawcheck are just two examples of this.
Sophie’s achievements as President include:
The redeployment of the Society’s communication and public affairs strategy;
Maintenance of the momentum spurred by her predecessor in world-class activities, including the planning of Face to Face on Economic Policy: Krugman VS Rogoff in November 2015 and the visit by Robert Prince, Co-CIO of Bridgewater;
The hiring of a new Administrative Director following the departure of Suzie Éthier, a pillar of the Society for more than 17 years.
Consolidation and enhancement of the Society’s standing on a local, national and international level;
Negotiation of numerous private partnerships of great benefit to CFA Montreal;
Increased media visibility of CFA Montreal and the presence of journalists at events through an agreement with National Public Relations;
Ongoing representation of CFA Montreal with the CFA Institute, including at the May 2016 CFA Institute annual conference, the planning of an October 2016 Research Foundation initiative, and the April 2017 talk by the leader of the Future of Finance Program.
Also of note are the awards won by CFA Montreal in May 2017 during Sophie’s term:
Most Outstanding Society by Size Award – More than 2,000 Members
Research Foundation Award – Content
Collaboration Award – Recognition of all 12 Canadian Societies
Sophie was also the recipient of the 2017 Volunteer of the Year Award for the Americas. “We are honoured to receive these awards in recognition for our hard work this past year,” she said. “As a member society of the CFA Institute, we are dedicated to helping build the next generation of investment professionals, serving our members, and promoting the highest standards of ethics and education to maintain professional excellence in our industry. We are proud of the recognition shown by the CFA Institute for our commitment to supporting the organization’s mission.”
Sophie, we greatly appreciate your contribution to our Society and congratulate you on your hard work and well deserved awards. We wish you the very best in the many successes we’re sure lie ahead for you. Bravo and thank you!
