The Financial Crisis and Marked to Market Accounting
Did accounting, and especially fair value accounting, play a role in the current financial crisis? Some argue that fair value accounting is just a messenger carrying bad news. In contrast, many critics consider that financial reporting practices, including fair value accounting, undermine the core of our traditional financial reporting model. In my view, while accounting had an impact on the financial crisis that we are going through, it is likely to be more subtle than what both viewpoints imply.
